Match Coverage

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! NEWS OF THE WORLD! It has come to pass that +PLuS+'s very own J0k3r TOTALLY owns the GLeagues 1v1 ladder. You might ask why I am reporting on the 1v1 ladder where I usually opine, but I gotta talk about the achievement. J0k3r has managed to win 10 freakin' matches in a row! He is the King Of The Hill on that ladder and I'm so proud of hisself that I'm almost about to burst!

His tenth conquer was Force Of One, who recently was with the MMC, who he left to go play with DNR for awhile. I don't know what happened to MMC - they must have disbanded because they dropped off of the CTF ladder. In a wierd twist of fate, F01 (as he called himself with DNR) left DNR with a boot up his keister, as I understand it, owing directly to the idiotic verbiage that spilled from F01's keyboard after J0k3r stomped him 3 games to none.

Now, I saw an example of the crap that F01 accosted our superstar with. Unbelievable pap it was - extremely childish and unprofessional. I don't think he ever accused (outright, anyway) J0k3r of cheating, but he did call him "no skill", and other really incredibly stupid stuff. This after he got beat real bad. Told J0k3r that J0k3r spawn kills in a DM! I mean, how stupid can you get, guys? He actually suggested that J0k3r did not play with honor because J0k3r did not give F01 enough time to pick up a weapon after spawning before killing. I find this particularly humurous!

I mean, let's think about this for a minute. First, the Game is called Death Match. How can you call any killing in a DM spawn-killing? This is ludicrous! I can't tell you how many times I've been killed by someone spawning and gatting me down with a freakin pistol to my Assault or HMG. You can't let them be - it's kill or be killed. Second, there's no way that you "camp" the spawn points, being a single player, as the game only allows you to spawn twice in the same location (it's been my experience) before shunting you somewhere else.

So Force Of One - STFU Newbie!

J0k3r, cudos and props on a well-deserved 10th victory. You're on the top dude - enjoy it while you can!

Now, let's talk about cheaters, and where to draw the line for a minute.

First, has anyone noticed the servers up now that are advertising for cheaters? Servers like "MODS Welcome", or "MODs and Cheats Here". What do you think about this?

My first thought was, "Yeah you weenie SOBs. Gotta play your cheats and show off and crap. Buncha little flaky worms." Then I got to thinking. Wait a minute. This is a GOOD thing!

I mean, I have to say, RF was originally built with the ability for people to mod. Now, it was intended that mods could only be used when everyone was using the same mod (like the HIVES mod). The server was supposed to have to run it, and only people running that mod could join the server. I have absolutely NO problem with that. I can even understand why someone would want to do that. After all, it can sometimes get boring playing the same stuff over and over and over...

But the CHEATERS are something else. They like to use a mod when no one else can. The 1.2 patch was supposed to fix cheaters coming in via the mods, but now they've figured out a way to hack the game itself, and at this point, there's nothing anyone can do.

Best thing that can happen to RF is that they go to their own servers and play there. Maybe they're actually starting to realize that they suck so bad it just makes them look like idiots when they fly around, rapid fire, etc, and still die easily. Now maybe they'll start getting out of our hair and play in their own servers...

Now let's talk about things that are mods but should not be considered cheating. This may cause some brows to raise. Some people say that the slightest little mod to RF is cheating. Some say that the slightest little aid is cheating. It would be easiest to simply draw a line in the sand and say "any modification to the game or any enhancement not provided with the game is considered to be a cheat." But as we all know, life is not black and white but varying shades of gray.

There is one modification to the game that I consider a non-cheat, and anyone could (and should) do it. That is the replacement of the reticles, otherwise known as crosshairs. Let's face it folks, the crosshairs that Volition provided with Rf pretty much suck the big one. Replace them. It's easy. if I get enough feedback and/or requests on this one I will either write an article describing how to do this, or reply to emails with instructions. All it does is help focus your eyes a little bit and major clans themselves have put out reticle packs in the past. I am in full support of this mod and you should be too.

The other one is the use of a communications application during gameplay. +PLuS+ uses Battlecom during its clan matches and I defy anyone to explain to me (logically) why this is a cheat. I'm running out of room here, but I can magnify this discussion too, if required. But basically, clan play is supposed to be a higher level than just futzing around on a server somewhere. ALL CLANS should use some form of voice comms during their game. Failure to do so is like saying "we shouldn't practice together because that would be cheating..."

I would truly love to debate any opposing view points on this. Also, if anyone can come up with other mods that should not be considered cheating, I'd love to hear and possibly debate those as well. Send me an email! Please! I REQUIRE feedback (FEED ME!).

And now, the news...

CTF Ladder

Our #1 team is still tightly ensconced in first play in CTF league play. They beat DNR yesterday to remain in the number 1 slot. DNR is good, but not that good (no offense guys - ya know I love yas!). Of course, unless they have challenges from below, they have no choice but to challenge #1, since they're #2. Kudos to both teams.

Team BoA has climbed the ladder fairly quickly to jump into the number 3 spot with a win against .fa. a little over a week ago. They'll have to hold tight as our #2 team is challenging their right to hold that spot, contest to be decided on April 6 at 3:00 in the afternoon. BoA has some hot guns on their side. Should be an interesting match.

Biggest news in the CTf ladder just now is Nother NERV. They jumped up to challenge (previously) 4th ranked .fa. The games were something else (I had a little in here, since my honey is |NERV|cece and plays just down the hall from my office). The first two games were all NERVs. .fa. came back to fight hard and tied the third game. According to league rules, a tie results in a win for both teams, and the matches are set for the best 3 out of 5, giving Nother |NERV| the victory. They now hold the 4th spot, putting .fa. down to fifth.

There's more to the story, and I need to say it here just to give .fa. some props. All were unaware of the GLeagues rule regarding ties, and the two teams went on to play some more games. They thought they had to play a fourth, deciding game since the thrid was a tie. NERV lost that one, so they went to a fifth game and lost that as well. At this point, it seemed as though a sixth game was required since the match stood at 3-3 (counting the 3rd game as a tie that both teams score a win). Although it was close, NERV lost that one as well.

A note here: Both teams fought hard and were well-matched. I do think Nother NERV is the better team overall and probably should have won this one to begin with. However, they were short one of their senior members, and tying the second game threw them off a little, I think. We all know how the downward spiral of lack of confidence can go when you find yourself in a match that wasn't as easy as you thought it was going to be going into it. But this just says more good things for .fa. who was able to overcome a 2-0 start to come back against such a tough opponent so well.

Both teams upheld the honor of their clans with grace and I think they both came out winners. Nother NERV and .fa. are good examples of sportsmanship in this ladder.

1 vs. 1 Ladder

Not too much to say on the 1v1 ladder this time. I said the biggest thing in my opinion section. J0k3r rulez!

Having said that, there is more. Stuff2-Break (fomerly with clan JD, who is now defunct) has challenged the leader of the ladder. I just recently played Stuff 1v1 and was slaughtered in two games, and simply handily beaten in the third. As much better than me that Stuff is, though, I don't think he's gonna be a match to J0k3r. Luck to both. Game time hasn't been set yet.

RazorsEdge holds the second position. He's been challenged by a joke...uh, I mean Force Of One, who is currently in the third spot. This game is gonna be played on April 12 at 10:00 pm. Quite frankly, I don't think Force has a snowball's chance in hell.

MightyMike (from BoA) is in the fourth rung at this time. This dude also beat me quite handily (yes, I've gotten my ass smacked a couple times on this ladder!). He's being challenged by our fearless league admin, [NoZ]13. I've not played 13 much, but I know he's good. Never played him 1v1, but I know MightyMike is fearsome when faced alone. It's gonna be a tough row to hoe for 13. Game will be played on April 2 at 5:00 pm.

There are now 77 players on the 1v1 ladder!!! Come one, come all! Don't let fear hold you back! Join up and let's get it going. We're all having fun here (and if I can lose so hard and still survive, so can you, trust me). Come play with us!
