A Phoolz' Match

Why do we play Red Faction (and other FPS) Multiplayer games? It can’t just be the sheer need to destroy – we could get plenty of that in the single player versions of the games. I doubt it’s the fact that you get to play new maps that aren’t in the single player version – map editors available to gamers have been around at least as far back as Doom II. No, the obvious reason must be the (hopefully) intelligent actions of the opponent, as compared to the AI one plays against in the single-player versions. Anyone can get in a rhythm when playing against the computer. The biggest advantage a computer has is speed and numbers – it can’t think it’s way out of a pre-schooler’s maze… But other players, real-life individuals that think and act like the people they are. Competition. Ah, there’s the word…Competition. It’s addictive, rush-infective, adrenaline-boosting, sheer evil fun. Pitting yourself against another, knowing that your wins are real, and a triumph over another person, not some unknowing machine. |
I think the best thing about playing the game is being in a clan. It gives a purpose a bit larger than just going out and having fun every now and then. It lends competition to the mix, and that’s competition on a level far above anything one experiences in a CTF or TeamDM game as an individual. When you are a part of a team that really meshes together and roams the map, destroying at will and taking the flag as soon as it’s captured, you’ll become so hooked that you’ll find yourself looking for the next match against another worthy clan… Anyway, this article will be dedicated to providing day-by-day commentary on the league action going on at GLeagues. There are currently 4 different RF ladders on that site; TeamDM, 2v2 TeamDM, TeamCTF and 1 on 1 DM. I will only cover the CTF and 1v1 ladders. These are the most exciting things going on right now. The other leagues will heat up, though, and look for info there soon. In addition, I will consider other ladders/leagues/matches. If you have anything important regarding competition in the RF world, let me know. In addition, if anyone is currently not enrolled in a ladder (like anywhere), I hope the reportings in this column goose you enough to propel your ass to the site to sign up…Unca RF wants YOU! And now, the news (we’ll make this first one a short intro). |

The CTF ladder currently has 15 different teams competing! Most of these are actually active. A few teams have yet to play a game, and others that haven’t played are about to be booted for forfeits. There is a good core of teams that do play, though, and this league is getting ready to catch fire! I am proud to say that the +PluS+ clan’s Team #1 leads the ladder. They recently defended their title and their no-loss streak successfully from a challenge by Cove (no URL available). The match was played on Friday, March 1. +PluS+ #1’s record now stands at 3-0! Excellent work! Clan CSD currently holds second place. They have accepted a challenged from the folks at .fatal attraction. (.fa.), match to be played on March 5 at 7:00 pm. CSD’s record stands at 1-1 (win v Red Faction, loss v +Plus+ #1). The challengers have not yet played a match. My money’s on the folks at CSD. Meanwhile, Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) has beaten Martian Marine Corps (MMC), successfully defending the third ladder spot. Congrats to DNR, in what I’m sure was a well-played game by both teams. Better luck next time, jarheads! Below the first three slots is still a good amount of action. +PluS+ #2 currently holds the sixth spot via an unsatisfying forfeit win over challengers Tucker Center Session 3 (TC3). +PLuS+ #2 had been beaten previously by these guys and we were really looking forward to a rematch! |NERV| and Hell’s Elite Legions 2 (HEL – no URL available) have recently entered the ladder. This should make things very interesting indeed. Stand back if you can’t handle the sparks… |
This ladder currently has 37 registered players! Incredible! Most of these peeps have yet to play a match, but that’s aight, sometimes it takes a little while to get going. We’ve got individuals from clans such as +PluS+, CSD, NoZ, MMC and DNR competing mano a mano. Once again, I have the pleasure to be able to report that +PluS+ leads the top spot. Our very own +J0k3R+ controls that position quite firmly with an unbeaten 5 wins! Is he untouchable? My bet right now is that only another +PluS+ could even approach him…and look at spot #2! Our very own +[Px]Immortal Bob+! Although in second place, he has a bit of a ladder to climb to match +J0k3r+, with a 3-2 record. Bob just recently lost to our clown in a well-fought battle. However, Bob is one deadly SOB and it wouldn’t surprise me to find that he’ll be the one to take the clown down (+J0k3r+, you know I love you, dude!). Sitting in third place is [NoZ] 13, with a solid 3-2 record, a possible match for our Bob. Look for a lot of action from this guy, I predict he’ll be a continuous contender for one of the top 5 spots, at least. Mr. 13 will be defending his spot from +Wolfspectre+ (currently ranked #16) on March 3rd at 7:00 PM. Good luck to Wolfy (and to 13, but Wolfy’s one of ours!). Coming up right behind [NoZ] 13 is another honored +PLuS+ member, Mr. +504+. You may think the name a little on the boring side, but his game play is purely evil. I can’t even begin to count the number of times that sucker’s gatted me down, fried my brains, and just general committed mayhem upon my person. He’s due to play –DNR- Rot (alright you guys – what’s with the three-letter names! It makes it hard to tell you all apart sometimes!) on March 3rd at 8:00 pm, in defense of the 4th position. |
